The Impact of Arthritis in Canada: Today and Over the Next 30 Years

About the Arthritis Alliance of Canada

The Arthritis Alliance of Canada, formerly the Alliance for the Canadian Arthritis Program (ACAP), was formed in 2002. Its goal is to improve the lives of Canadians with arthritis.

With more than 20 member organizations, the Alliance bring together arthritis health care professionals, researchers, funding agencies, governments, voluntary sector agencies, industry and, most importantly, representatives from arthritis consumer organizations from across Canada. While each member organization continues its own work, the Alliance provides a central focus for national arthritis-related initiatives.

Towards a National Framework for Arthritis

On October 27, 2011 the Arthritis Alliance of Canada (AAC) released The Impact of Arthritis: Today and the Next 30 Years. The report examines the cost and consequences of continuing with current practices and not taking the necessary action to improve the diagnosis and treatment of arthritis. The report uncovers the health and economic benefits that would result if changes were made, sets the stage for engaging with decision makers and identifies that Canada needs a National Framework for Arthritis.

What's Next?

The National Framework for Arthritis will focus on three distinct strategies:

  1. Advance knowledge and awareness of arthritis
  2. Identify opportunities and prescribe plans to improve prevention and care
  3. Support ongoing collaboration among stakeholders, government, other chronic disease groups
